Afghanistan Community Center

Through the ACTS in Faith campaign, Redeemer is partnering with Morning Star Development to help build a Community Center in Afghanistan. By helping the redevelopment efforts of this country, we have the opportunity to send the message of Christ to the “ends of the earth.”

Community Center Status:

Through Redeemer’s financial commitment and that of other ministry partners, Morning Star plans to break ground on their second Community Center in the spring of 2007. Current plans:

  • Construction of a perimeter wall, well and two buildings in 2007. The two buildings will probably be the medical clinic and the education building.
  • Implement programs for clinic and education building in 2007.
  • Construction of team house, communications center, agricultural plots, sports facilities, and general grounds work in 2008.
  • Host teams from Redeemer and other partners.
  • Implement programs in all facilities--fully operational by Spring 2009.

Below are some photos of the redevelopment efforts through Morning Star Development. Click on the photo for a larger image.

Morning Star Community Centers provide critical services otherwise unavailable to rural villages:  health care, water treatment, educational programs, Internet access, small business center, agricultural training, and recreation facilities.  Ministering to material needs builds credibility and opens doors to spiritual needs.  "Why do Christians come from America to help us when our Muslim neighbors do not?"  What a great question!
After 25 years of war and destruction, the fragile peace gives hope to a new generation.  The government of Afghanistan has challenged Morning Star to build 1000 Community Centers to give rural villagers, and especially young people, opportunities for a better life.

Clinical Care
Morning Star works with relief organizations to distribute food and blankets to the poor.  Most Afghans are subsistence farmers, and food stores dwindle by the end of winter.  Frequent droughts trigger widespread food shortages.
Life expectancy and infant mortality rates in Afghanistan are among the worst in the world.  A Community Center brings basic medical care to the rural population.  As one village elder recently lamented:  "I have $4 for medicine, but I do not have $40 to go and get it."

Young girls eagerly attend small schools sponsored by Morning Star.  Under the Taliban it was forbidden to educate girls.  While this is no longer the case, opportunities for girls are still severely limited in Afghanistan.
Women clad in the traditional Burkha in the waiting room of a Morning Star medical clinic.  Children are vaccinated against common childhood diseases.  Mothers are taught about the importance of simple hygiene.

Enjoying a game of basketball - The Community Center serves as a platform for short term teams to minister in Afghanistan. A team from a Presbyterian church in Missouri held a basketball clinic for local youth.  A woman from Arkansas taught a group of women how to cut hair, and provided them with the basic supplies to start their own home business.  There are so many simple and creative ways that YOU can make a difference!
